SLURRY PLATE CONSISTENCY

This test provides a numerical value for seal consistency. The recommended performance guideline for emulsified asphalt slurry seal, provides specific target values for consistency results.

This test measure the flow characterics of slurry seal system components for lab evaluations.

The mixture is place in the sand absorption cone, the cone removed, and the flow of the slurry is measured and recorded as the slurry consistency in centimeters.

 

The slurry seal consistency plate test is a laboratory test to evaluate the flow characteristics of a slurry seal mixture. The test involves placing the mix in a sand absorption cone, removing the cone, and measuring the flow in centimeters to determine a numerical value for consistency. While this is a lab procedure, on-site adjustments for water content are made to achieve a creamy consistency for application, and a bulking test is used to monitor the mixture’s consistency daily.

Laboratory test procedure:
  • Test components: The test uses a sand absorption cone and the mixture to be tested.
  • Procedure:
    1. Place the slurry seal mix into the sand absorption cone.
    2. Remove the cone.
    3. Measure and record the distance the slurry flows in centimeters.
  • Purpose: This provides a numerical value for the mixture’s consistency, which is used in lab evaluations and performance guidelines. 
On-site adjustments and quality control:
  • Adjusting consistency: 
    On-site, water is added to the mix to achieve a workable, creamy consistency. The amount of water needed can vary based on the aggregate type and ambient temperature. 

  • Consistency monitoring: 
    A daily “bulking test” is performed on the crusher dust to check if the mix proportions need to be adjusted to maintain a consistent quality. 

  • Surface consistency: 
    During application, the slurry is spread with squeegees to ensure a uniform consistency and thickness.
