- Excavation: A cylindrical hole is excavated in the compacted soil.
- Soil Weight and Moisture Content: The excavated soil is weighed and its moisture content is determined.

- Volume Calculation: By knowing the weight and density of the sand, the volume of the hole (and therefore the excavated soil) can be calculated.
- Density Calculation: Using the weight of the excavated soil and its volume, the bulk density (and later the dry density) can be determined.
